Family Learning FAQs

Courses are run at local schools, children’s centres, community centres, libraries and other local venues. If mothers, fathers and carers want to learn with their children as a family, or to further develop their own skills to support their children at school, we will have a course that suits their needs.

Courses are firstly for parents and carers without level 2 qualifications and can improve parents’ English and Maths skills which in turn increases their confidence to help their children learn. In addition participation in family learning courses enables parents to have more contact with the education system and become more active partners with schools and nurseries.

Family learning builds confidence, skills and interest to go on learning in adults and children and enable families to learn with and from each other. Our courses also promote family relationships, raise the attainment and / or achievement of adults and encourage positive behaviour and attitude changes in children through the promotion of collaborative learning.

Adult Learning is funded by the Skills Funding Agency to provide learning opportunities in Northamptonshire. This is how Family Learning courses are provided free of charge to schools, early years settings and learners.

Keeping Up with the Children: Find out how literacy and numeracy is taught in schools today - and brush up your own skills at the same time

Family Language (mainly for parents with English as a second language)
Family Maths - a six week course with the option to progress to Certificated Learning

(which can progress to Certificated Learning)
* Social Media in the Family
* Safety Online for Families
* Family IT - brush up your computer skills to be able to help your school children with homework etc
* Range of workshops: Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Email and Online Accounts

Course titles and current opportunities in Corby..

Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and English are key qualifications required for entry into many higher education courses. English, Maths and IT are delivered locally in small groups over 24 weekly sessions to gain awards between Entry Level 3 and Level 2, alongside AIM module awards.

Family Learning gives opportunities for our learners to achieve other certificates which can be valuable for CVs and job applications, as well as confidence and good practice at home:

That could mean:

* The next level of the same subject (perhaps to achieve a certificate).
* A path to higher education courses
* More formal Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG), to help you understand options for volunteering, further training or employment

We also work closely with Parent Support specialists in schools to make sure you and you family are getting the support you need.
